Serenate
A mobile app designed as a quiet digital companion for breathwork, meditation, and intentional stillness, paired with custom background sounds.
Why I Built Serenate
I built Serenate because I wanted a meditation and breathing app that got out of my way.
Most of the apps I tried came wrapped in things I didn't want: streaks to keep, hours to log, gentle nudges or aggressive reminders that turned a calm practice into one more thing to track or optimize. I needed the opposite. Something simple and quiet, with no gamification and no feeling of failure or another goal to reach.
It was also important to me that the app not belong to any one tradition. Meditation and breath-work show up across many faiths, and I didn't want to hinder a practice by creating a script that felt foreign. So Serenate stays deliberately open. It gives you the structure, a timer, breathing cues, a calm space to return to, and lets you bring the meaning yourself, whether that is silence, music, a prayer, or a teacher's voice you already trust.
The part I care about most came straight out of my own practice. I like to sit with something playing in the background, sometimes healing sounds, sometimes a bhajan (devotional song) or a guided track. I was tired of having to choose between ads on YouTube that distracted from the practice or gamified apps with limited audio options. So Serenate is built to play timers or chimes alongside whatever you want to listen to — a favorite musical instrument, a trusted guide, or a prayer from your faith.
I have leaned on these practices off and on for many years, and Serenate is my attempt to build the version I wished for: free, private, and simple enough that you actually keep coming back to it. I am grateful to the AI advancements that helped me close the gap between vision and reality, and to all the meditation teachers along the way.
What Serenate Does
Serenate keeps things simple. Here is what is inside.
- Breathing sessions. Follow clear visual and audio cues through patterns like box breathing and 4-7-8, or set your own inhale, hold, and exhale timings. Every interval and duration is adjustable, so the session fits you rather than the other way around.
- Timed sessions. A clean timer with configurable interval bells and total length. Useful for multiple practices such as quiet meditation, holding yoga poses, or timing positions in a Reiki practice. You control both the intervals and the overall duration.
- Guided meditations. A small set of guided tracks to begin with, and more on the way.
- Plays alongside your own audio. This is the heart of Serenate. It mixes with whatever else you are playing instead of interrupting it. Add your own sound files inside the app, or simply start any music app, whether that is YouTube, Spotify, Amazon Music, or another, and Serenate layers your interval cues and bells over the top. Your music never stops.
- Made to be yours. Adjust session length, cue sounds, and background audio to suit your practice. Use the built-in bells and gongs, or add your own.
- Secular by design. No tradition is assumed. Bring your own music, prayers, chanting, or silence.
- Simple and private. Serenate is free, with no account and no setup. Your settings stay on your device, and sessions work offline, so you can practice on a plane or a camping trip just as easily as at home.
