Serenate

A mobile app designed as a quiet digital companion for breathwork, meditation, and intentional stillness, paired with custom background sounds.

Why I Built Serenate

I built Serenate because I wanted a meditation and breathing app that got out of my way.

Most of the apps I tried came wrapped in things I didn't want: streaks to keep, hours to log, gentle nudges or aggressive reminders that turned a calm practice into one more thing to track or optimize. I needed the opposite. Something simple and quiet, with no gamification and no feeling of failure or another goal to reach.

It was also important to me that the app not belong to any one tradition. Meditation and breath-work show up across many faiths, and I didn't want to hinder a practice by creating a script that felt foreign. So Serenate stays deliberately open. It gives you the structure, a timer, breathing cues, a calm space to return to, and lets you bring the meaning yourself, whether that is silence, music, a prayer, or a teacher's voice you already trust.

The part I care about most came straight out of my own practice. I like to sit with something playing in the background, sometimes healing sounds, sometimes a bhajan (devotional song) or a guided track. I was tired of having to choose between ads on YouTube that distracted from the practice or gamified apps with limited audio options. So Serenate is built to play timers or chimes alongside whatever you want to listen to — a favorite musical instrument, a trusted guide, or a prayer from your faith.

I have leaned on these practices off and on for many years, and Serenate is my attempt to build the version I wished for: free, private, and simple enough that you actually keep coming back to it. I am grateful to the AI advancements that helped me close the gap between vision and reality, and to all the meditation teachers along the way.

What Serenate Does

Serenate keeps things simple. Here is what is inside.
